Digital PR Is How Link Building Works Now

The link building industry spent years optimising the wrong variable: emails sent. Response rates fell accordingly. What still works is the thing that always worked - producing something a writer genuinely wants to reference, and telling the right people it exists.

Data you already have

Most companies sit on proprietary data that is genuinely interesting once aggregated and anonymised: pricing trends, usage patterns, regional differences, seasonal shifts. The work is not collecting it, it is finding the angle that makes it a story rather than a dashboard.

A statistic becomes a story when it contradicts what the reader assumed.

Pitch the story, not the asset

A pitch that says "we published a report" asks the journalist to do the work of finding an angle. A pitch that leads with the surprising finding, names the sample size and method, and offers the data in a usable form has already written their first paragraph. Personalise on their actual beat, not on their first name.

One well-targeted pitch to a relevant writer outperforms two hundred generic sends, and does not burn the domain's sending reputation.

Judge links properly

Third-party authority scores are estimates built from crawl data, and optimising for them directly leads to buying links on irrelevant high-score sites. Better criteria: does the site's audience overlap with your customers, does the page get real traffic, is the link editorially placed in relevant context, and would you be pleased to see the mention regardless of SEO.

Measurement that survives scrutiny

Track links earned per asset and cost per earned link. That framing makes the comparison honest - a study costing a lot that earns forty relevant links can beat a year of cheap outreach that earned twelve. It also tells you which asset types to repeat, which is the only way this discipline compounds.
